Iron Fence

Wrought Iron Fence

An iron fence is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and hardy fences one can install. It gives any property an upscale and expensive feel. It is timeless and has been used for centuries as a barrier around the most exquisite homes and estates.

History of Wrought Iron

Wrought Iron fencing dates back to the 12th century. Blacksmiths used the smelting process to smelt iron ore, refining the iron into a malleable metal for use. As smelting processes improved, the workability of the metal did. Blacksmiths began to forge more detailed presentations. Compared to today’s standards, these fences lack uniformity and attention to detail as they were formed manually by blacksmiths.

Iron Fence Today

Today wrought iron fences are manufactured from iron ore refined to a very low carbon iron alloy. This process creates a strong yet very malleable metal under heat. Once cooled, it is strong, corrosion-resistant, and easily welded. Its strength enhances the feeling of security when you are behind the gates.

Wrought iron will not warp or rust. If a fence is affected by storm damage, it is repairable due to its malleability. It is naturally corrosion-resistant. The metal may lose its luster as it ages. However, a coat of paint can restore it to its like-new shine. Its overall aesthetic can be very simple or elegantly detailed, depending on your tastes. Welders can create ornate patterns or accents for a custom fence.

Planning Your Fence

We recommend consulting with your Home Owner Association about proper permissions or guidelines that we must meet before we start. Inquiring before the project begins will save you from a lot of trouble later if you break ground without permission.

With permissions and guidelines, you can begin to plan the fence’s design, location, and size. Wrought Iron fences stand-alone or with brick, stone, wood, or cement. Decide which style fits your taste and your needs.

Measure the dimensions you wish to use. Contact your local authorities to ensure it is safe to dig in the intended location. We will need verification before we begin.

Our Process

We set the outline of the fence with stakes and string. The stakes are placed at each point the fence changes direction, and the string acts as an outline for the project.

A well-constructed fence requires a post at each corner, either side of every fence panel, and at each gate. We dig the holes for each post with a post hole digger, ensuring each post is spaced accurately to accommodate brackets and panel length. We dig the post holes six inches wide and two feet deep for standard six-foot tall fences. Hole depth will vary slightly based on the fence’s height compared to the land’s slope. After digging the holes, we add 6 inches of gravel to the bottom of each one to promote drainage. The posts are placed and set with concrete. For the fence posts to set and the concrete to cure, we allow them to dry for a minimum of a few days.

Once the concrete cures, the panels are ready to hang. We hang panels one at a time, attaching the panels to brackets on each post. Wrought iron panels are heavy; the fence may shift slightly and settle the week following installation.
